Basia Bańda Bird

Basia Bańda
Bird
Sculpture in Millennium Park

Opening and meeting with artist: Thursday, Sept 25, 6pm

Another installation to appear in Millennium Park has been created by Zielona Góra artist Basia Bańda. It is a sculpture of a huge, black raven with a hammock in it. The raven is commonly associated with fear and anxiety, and its ominous cawing believed to foretell a misfortune. It is also a symbol of power, strength and wisdom. In the folklore the black birds represent death and disease.

The artist was inspired by the birds that fly over the hospital in the vicinity of the park. Their appearance as well as the noisy calls make passers-by uneasy and even more prone to worrying about the lives of their loved ones.
By placing a hammock in the belly of a big bird Bańda aims to tame the somewhat exaggerated fear of the big creature. In this way a shape which seems ominous as seen from afar, becomes a tame one when approached. Its presence in Millennium Park is expected to make passers-by feel safe and sheltered.

The main focus of Bańda’s installation is on the relation between humans and nature and is a reflection on the fear of nature and meanings that have been attached to the natural world by humans.

Barbara Bańda graduated from painting at Fine Arts Academy in Poznań (2006), in the atelier of professor Jarosław Kozłowski, and is an assistant in the studio of Ryszard Woźniak at The Institute of Visual Arts at University of Zielona Góra. Basia Bańda was a recipient of a scholarship of the Ministry of Culture and one granted by Polish National Centre for Culture.

Her works were presented at individual exhibitions, in institutions including BWA Studio in Wrocław, BWA Zielona Góra, Miejsce Projektów Zachęta in Warsaw, Zakręt Gallery in Warsaw, and Zderzak Gallery in Kraków. Her works were included in a number of group exhibitions in Berlin, Gdańsk, Poznań, Nowy Sącz, Warsaw and Wrocław. Basia Bańda lives and works in Zielona Góra.
